Embedded instruction
Embedding is the process of implementing targeted skills for a particular child within daily activities. This approach to learning is one way that creates a more natural and meaningful way for children to work on the skills they are struggling with. This method of teaching is beneficial for both the student and the family. It is a seamless, comfortable method of teaching for everyone.
The way that embedded instruction is beneficial to the student is because there are a variety of ways that a child can gain access to the knowledge that they need. Let’s say for instance that a child particularly likes a learning center. This gives the teacher the ability to recognize this as fact and embed the information the student needs into that center. The child is then satisfied because they are doing something that they inherently love and they’re gaining knowledge in the process. Embedded instruction can be a very natural way for the student to accomplish their learning goals without the rigor that may accompany other lessons.
Embedded instruction is beneficial to the family because it allows an outlet for them to teach their child the information/skill they need while it being a part of their daily routine. It is significantly easier for a family to accomplish this type of task rather than setting aside specific time for instruction. This is also beneficial because it would certainly be a more comfortable setting for the family; a family may not feel comfortable acting as a “teacher” and would see instruction that is embedded into their daily lives as much more appealing.
